Whether you’re looking for a new job or some good advice, you would be surprised to learn that acquaintances be more helpful than good friends. In a classic study, sociologist Mark Granovetter showed that people were 58% more likely to get a new job through weak ties than strong ties.
Make it a habit to stay in touch with acquaintance’s, clients, and previous colleges. Re connecting ever so often can revel interesting and often hidden opportunities other wise not discovered.
After learning about these ideas, I added a repeating reminder to my calendar: reconnect with at least one dormant tie each month. With social media, it’s easier than ever to track them down and get back in touch. But remember its important to contact people int he manner they prefer, if you have a email, write but, if you have a contacts phone number a call is always best. Touching base with old or brief connections can help us revitalize old connections, relationships or new paths our old selves were jut not ready for yet.
